The Dutch-born has shed light on his maiden appearance in the English top flight

Manchester United youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah has revealed being nervous ahead of his English Premier League debut at Old Trafford.

The 18-year-old Dutch defender of Ghanaian descent made his top-flight bow in the Red Devil’s 3-2 defeat of Arsenal last month, coming on as a substitute for the injured Marcos Rojo.

“I was overwhelmed, very overwhelmed when I came on,” Fosu-Mensah was quoted as saying by Daily Star.

“When I sat on the bench, I was more nervous than when I had to play football itself for the first time.

“Thankfully, the players around me helped me very much. Michael Carrick, Daley Blind and Guillermo Varela really helped me to play well and do what I had to do.”

The versatile defender has gone on to make three more league appearances for Louis van Gaal’s outfit.

“After the game, Carrick came up to me plus Memphis and Blind,” Fosu-Mensah added.

“The manager also came to me and congratulated me. Ryan Giggs as well. Everyone told me I’d done well and it was very pleasing to me.

“For a young boy of 18 to be put in the team for such a big game shows confidence from the manager in me.”

Fosu-Mensah joined United from Dutch outfit Ajax in 2014 after catching the attention of scouts at the AEGON Future Cup.

He has represented the Netherlands at under-15, 16, 17 and 19 levels.
