Football fan takes GFA to court

Sekondi (Western Region) 8 October 1998 Mr Kojo Mensah, a Cape Coast-based businessman and a football fan, has filed a writ at a Sekondi High Court against the Ghana Football Association's (GFA) decision not to carry out the relegation exercise of the 1997/98 ABC Golden Lager premier football league.

Mr Mensah says in his writ that the decision of GFA is contrary to the agreement and rules reached by the association and all football clubs before the commencement of the league.

He therefore asked the GFA to carry out the relegation exercise in accordance with the rules and agreement which govern the league.

In a statement of claim accompanying the writ, Mr Mensah said that at the start of the just-concluded 1997/98 premier football league, it was agreed between the GFA and all the major football clubs that the last two teams at the end of the league were to be relegated to the first division while the first two teams from the first division were to be promoted to the premier division.

He said the GFA recently announced decision is contrary to and inconsistent with the earlier decision, agreement and rules reached before the commencement of the league.

The plaintiff said that the new decision does not show any transparency and accountability and only shows favouritism, discrimination, bias and victimisation for or against some clubs.

Mr Mensah said that such conduct and behaviour seriously and adversely affect the development of football and the interest of the public at large. GRi
