Simpson arrives on Friday for top award

Accra, July 30, GNA ---Margaret Simpson, the winner of the 2003 Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Sports Personality of the year award is scheduled to arrive in the country on Friday August 1, to receive the award at this years' SWAG awards night scheduled for Saturday August 2, at the Banquet Hall, State House.

Simpson who is currently at a training camp in Mauritius is scheduled to arrive on Friday at 10: 30 pm by South African Airlines.

Simpson who is Ghana's sole hepthlon bronze medallist at last year's Commonwealth Games in Manchester and gold in the African Championship in Tunisia is the first woman to have won the top award in the 28 years of the association's history.

President John Agyekum Kufuor , the special guest off honour, would decorate her at the ceremony.

The 20- year old athlete would be given an additional award as Athlete of the Year and will receive a special award from the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.

Other award winners are Charles Taylor of Accra Hearts of Oak footballer of the year and Florence Okoe of La Ladies who is a key player of the Black Queens.

Taylor and his former team-mate Bernard Don Bortey who both tied with 18 goals each at the end of last Premier League season will receive the Joint Goal-King award.
Defending league Champions Hearts of Oak will take home the top scoring club award for the sixth successive year with 72 goals. The rest are team of the Year- the Black Queens, James Toney - Professional Boxer of the Year and Joseph Willington -Referee of the Year.
