Lloyd Sam scores impressive finish for Red Bulls

English-born Ghanaian winger Lloyd Sam scored what could challenge for the MLS’s goal of the week contender for New York Red Bulls in their humiliating 5-2 home loss against Orlando City FC on Friday night.

The 30-year-old, who once played in the English Premier League with Charlton Athletic, cut the deficit for Red Bulls in the 58th minute with the silkiest of finishes inside the Orlando City box.

Sam, born to Ghanaian parents in the United Kingdom and a relative of former AshantiGold SC chief Captain Andy Sam, scored his goal in between rookie sensation Cyle Larin who scored a hat trick to propel Orlando City SC.

Things had already gone from bad to worse for the host when coach Jesse Marsch was ejected by referee Jorge Gonzalez in the 57th minute for arguing a call.

Still, Lloyd Sam re-energized the crowd one minute later by scoring to pull the Red Bulls within one.

Sam took a pass from Gonzalo Veron in the box, spun and fired a low shot past Orlando goalie Tally Hall.

Sam is yet to be capped by either Ghana or his country of birth and Black Stars head coach Avram Grant watched him in the MLS during his visit of the United States earlier in the season.

He has now bagged 8 league goals in 26 appearances for the Bulls this season.
