Jonathan Mensah to appeal ban

Agent of Jonathan Mensah Antoine Figali has served notice of his intention to appeal CAS’ decision to hand a four-month ban to the Ghana defender.

Mensah was handed the worldwide ban in a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) last week over a breach in transfer regulations over the defender’s move from Udinese to Evian TG in 2011.

The 24-year-old joined the French club in 2011 as a free agent but CAS ruled he was still under contract with Udinese.

Udinese have been pursuing this case since the move happened in 2011 and finally got the ruling in their favour.

CAS aside handing a four-month ban to Mensah have ordered Evian who have been relegated from the French top flight to pay EUR 1m in compensation to Udinese.

The ban will see Mensah miss Ghana’s opening 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Mauritius in June as his punishment which takes effect on April 29 will end in August.

But Antoine Figali who was the agent involved in the deal back in 2011 says he will appeal against the decision.

This appeal will be lodged at the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland.

This appeal is however unlikely to be successful as only once in the history of the appellate body has it overruled a decision by CAS.
