Marseille not strong enough to keep me – Andre

Andre Ayew has revealed the weakness of the Olympique Marseille team was one of the reasons he has decided not to extend his stay at the club.

The Ghana forward is out of contract at the end of the current campaign and has confirmed he will not be renewing his contract.

Several clubs including Napoli, Newcastle, Roma and Inter Milan have all been linked to the 25-year-old.

There were however slim hopes that the enforcer would sign onto a renewal at Marseille.

But aside the inability of the club to pay higher wages to the Ghanaian, Ayew says the team’s weakness in challenging for laurels played a part in his decision to leave the club.

“There are many things behind it. We tried to find solutions that I stay but for the club and me it was a bit complicated, whether in sport or financial aspects,” Ayew said.

“I expected more, I wanted the club to have a competitive team next year to play the title and it is not insured. And the club could not offer me the same wage.”

Ayew’s confirmation is likely to alert serious bids from suitors in a race that is reportedly being led by Roma.
