MTN Asantehene Gold Cup comes off at Royal Golf Club

The 58th Asantehene Open Golf Championship, recently referred to as the MTN Asantehene Gold Cup will be played at the Royal Golf Club, Kumasi from Thursday 14th May 2015 to 17th May 2015.This year's edition will see the separation of Scratch (up to hcp 6) and handicap (7-14) playing 36 holes over Saturday and Sunday. Support (15-24) will play on Friday.
A rare opportunity has been given to players with higher handicap that are desirous to play in a better category to play in a qualifier on Thursday and Friday to take part the respective categories the next day. Notable scratch players expected include past Asantehene open winners like Eben Asabere, Edmund Agyekum and Kofi Kyei all of Royal Golf Club, Kumasi.
The current and the immediate past GGA Golfer of The Year, Kwabena Poku and Maxwell Owusu Bonsu. In the handicap category players expected to feature include Tony Yeboah, Franklin Gyasi, Samuel Frimpong, President and Captain of the Royal Golf Club, Frankie Osei Asibey and Dr BK Baiden, Lawyer Akwasi Poku of Celebrity, Frank Adu the Achimota Captain, and many other Captains.
The support category will feature EK Bonsu and Paul Ahun from Kumasi, Hon Emile Short and Alfred Benson from Celebrity and Emmanuel Quarcoo from Achimota. Notable ladies in the field include defending Ghana Open Champion, Felicity Okyei- Gyeabour, Mary Prempeh, Etwi-Barima, Cynthia Nyantakyi and many more.
The Professionals will also for the first time play from Thursday to Sunday with the field being cut after 36 holes on Friday like it's done at the international stage. The total prize money is GHs30,000 and it is expected that the winning purse will be in the region of GHs 10,000. Over 40 players are expected to participate as MTN remain the lead and title sponsor for the championship. Contagion Ghana is the event managers for the 5th year running.
