Opoku's fine solo effort wins it for FC Oss

Dutch-Ghanaian forward Johnathan Opoku scored the only goal of the game as FC Oss beat Roda JC in the Eerste Divisie.

TOP moved up to fifth in the Dutch second tier with a 1-0 home victory over third-place Roda JC.

The two sides played out a tight, goalless first half which sparked into life after the break.

Opoku opened the scoring on 69 minutes with a 25-yard long-range strike, giving the home side a lead which they did not surrender, even as Roda shuffled the pack in search of an equaliser.

The midfielder had an occasion to give his side the lead inside the opening stages, but headed wide with six minutes on the clock.

Anco Jansen was dismissed for the Miners late on as their frustration got the better of them.

The goal was Opoku’s 12th of the season, and helps his side move onto 49 points, putting them two clear of sixth-place FC Emmen.

TOP Oss are in fine form in the Dutch second tier and their victory over Roda was their fourth in a row. They now have not lost since February 9. Following this victory, the team will be confident of securing a spot in the promotion play-offs.

24-year-old Opoku was born in Zutphen, Netherlands in 1990. He learned his trade at a number of local clubs before transferring to SC Veendam in 2011.

Two seasons later, he switched to Oss, currently managed by former VVV-Venlo coach Wil Boessen.

The midfielder is currently enjoying a prolific season, where he has averaged exactly a goal every other start—with 12 in 24 starts—in the Dutch second tier this season.
