Report: Kotoko held by Medeama in Kumasi

A late equalizer by Ahmed Toure handed Asante Kotoko a point after 1-1 draw with old foes Medeama SC on Sunday at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.

There was some controversy about Toure’s goal, with some debate as to whether the ball had actually crossed the line.

The 1-1 draw deepened Kotoko’s woes. The fallen giants are wallowing in the relegation zone having gone six games without a win. Their spell without three points continues, although fans of the club will be aware that things could have been much worse against Medeama.

The game, which was attended by a sizable amount of fans from both clubs, started on a slow note but it was the away side who made early incursions. Former Kotoko striker Nathaniel Asamoah tormented his former team mates in attack with some impressive running and incisive movement.

After a barren first half, Medeama midfielder Benjamin Bature scored in the 58th minute to give the away side the lead. Kotoko lifted their game and snatched a late equalizer through Toure in the 80th minute though the ball appeared to have bounced down off the line after hitting the upright.

After the game, Kotoko’s assistant coach Ernest Appau indicated that he feels the Porcupines’ attackers should have done more to contribute offensively.

"Jordan Opoku and Richard Mpong should have helped Toure up front because that was the formation we were playing,” Appau began.

“There is no bad blood between Toure and Opoku, they sleep in the same room in camp.”
