Sumaila sits out Sundowns title defence after failing to secure work permit

Ghana defender Rashid Sumaila failed to secure a work permit and missed champions Mamelodi Sundowns’ season opener against Maritzburg United on Friday night.

Sumaila was among four players who were unavailable for coach Pitso Mosimane in their title defence at Loftus Stadium.

Zimbabweans Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat as well as Zambia’s Mukuka Mulenga were missed.

The Brazilians went on to draw 1-1 at home with Maritzburg United who needed a late penalty from Ghana defender Mohammed Awal to level the scores.
