Mixed fortunes for Ghana in boxing at Commonwealth Games

Ghana experienced a mixed fortune in boxing at the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ghana’s Jessy Lartey had an easy payday with walk-over Tanzanian Mafuru Nasaar Mafuru, in the prelims of the Men’s Lightweight (60kg) after the later failed to appear for the fight.

Lartey, will now fight Rwadan Oliveir Nshigiro of Rwanda, who drew bye in the prelims at the second round of the competition.

Musah Lawson however failed to live up to the billing, when he lost by a unanimous decision to Arthur Biyaslanov of Canada in the Men’s Light welter weight (64kg).

The Ghanaian put up a brave fight but was not enough to save his dreams of advancing to next stage of the competition.

Ghana, will be seeking to make some medals in the competition from boxing, which is regarded as one of the gold mines of the country in the games.

Boxing has provided the nation with highest number of medals in the Commonwealth Games.
