2014 World Cup: Kwesi Appiah justify Adomah's selection

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has dismissed rumours  making rounds that his selection of Albert Adomah into his provisional World Cup squad is based on unexplained personal ties with the Middlesbrough winger.

The 26-year-old has been a regular feature in coach Appiah’s squad since making his tournament debut for the Black Stars at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Adomah made the provisional Black Stars squad for the 2014 World Cup which was announced on Monday.

Subtle rumours fast gaining grounds suggest the ex Bristol City man is benefiting from undeserved call ups due to an unexplained personal relationship with the coach.

Appiah has, however, debunked these rumours, insisting his selection was purely based on merits.

“I don’t joke with my work and, therefore, I don’t bring my personal sentiments into my job,” he told Montie FM.

“We currently don’t have a natural winger in the Black Stars squad to bring in the needed crosses.

“He [Adomah] is the only player who operates effectively on the wings and brings in a lot of crosses. He does that constantly at his club.

“Sometimes he is the only option we have in certain systems and tactics we play because of his unique attributes.

“He is very quick on the wings and a good crosser of the ball. We don’t have such a quality in abundance in the team.

“He has not been getting enough opportunities of late because nowadays we play with two strikers but he remains a part of the team and as and when he is needed he will be called upon to play.”

Adomah played 42 games for Middlesbrough and scored 12 goals in the recently ended season in the English Championship.
