Greater Accra Sports coaches share ideas and experience

The Greater Accra Regional Sports Authority has
organized the first ever Peer – Review Workshop for its district, municipal and
regional coaches, and sports directors at the Media Center of the Accra Sports
Stadium.
Mr. Kwame Amponfi Jr. the Acting Regional Sports
Director said the purpose of the premier workshop of such a kind was to appraise
the performance of the
regional, metropolitan, and district sports directors in the past year through
peer review based on the current rudiments respective sports disciplines
administered in the region.
He commended the participants who were lectured on
the Preparation of Action Plan, Minutes and Reports Writing, Laws and
Procedures Governing Public Procurement, Sports Nutrition and Injury Management
as well as Work Place HIV / AIDS Education and Management, all in the view of
improving staff capacity for efficient and effective sports development and
promotion in the region.
The articulate young sports manager and
administrator who lose his 75 years old mother, Madam Mary Blay aka Maame Yaba
of Twifo Kayireku, near Twifo-Praso two days to the workshop said the review
was basically aimed at making the coaches and sports directors share knowledge
and best practices among themselves, whiles individual peer performances are
also measured by unbiased panel against established regional, national and
international sports development and promotional growth standards, for reward,
encouragement and further capacity building where necessary.
He noted that the Sports Authority believes the
surest way to maximize effective and efficient sports development in the face
of inadequate financial, material and human resources is to organize such
programmes to sensitise the staff.
Kwame Amponfi Jr. hinted that the outcome of the
review will form part of the Regional Sports Authority’s 2013 Annual
Performance Report to the National Sports Authority for consideration by it and
the sector Ministry, whilst high performing coaches and directors from the
review will be selected for awards during the region’s end of year staff and
stakeholders awards to come off soon.
Some selected coaches who shared their ideas and
took pers through the history and rudiments of their disciplines were J.Adjasco
for volleyball, Henry Qwansah for tennis, E. Osabutey for handball, Francis
Frimpong for table Tennis, Benedict Ntreh for disabled Sports (Goalball),
Edmund Kpeglo for basketball, Amuzu Logosu for athletics, Ofori Asare and Dan
Lartey for boxing, Majety Fetri for weightlifting, Amuzu and Odoi Wilson for Rugby.
Soccer, cycling and swimming were absent due to ill health of the coaches.
Kwame Amponfi Jr. praised the media for promoting messages
of the region in terms of sports and letting the world know about their events
and achievements. He prayed that the world would appreciate the innovation of
the Regional Sports Authority for possible attraction of sponsorship to develop
sports in the region.
He also appealed to the NSA to adopt the programme
as a national event as to benefit all regional sports directors and coaches.
Erasmus Adorkor urged the coaches to be more
practical in unearthing and producing sports talents and be committed and
dedicated to the work, despite inadequate remuneration as they hope to attract
more resources to take care of the staff. He revealed that sport is all about
solving problems.
Madam Alice Attipoe, the Acting Director General of
the National Sports Authority (NSA) expressed that the workshop was very
appropriate as it was held at the right time. She tasked the coaches and sports
directors to be what they learnt into practice and not relax since there are
more activities to be done in the coming days, and the world is changing at a
faster rate. She advised them to look for partners for support in organizing their
programmes.
The one day event was graced by the Deputy Regional
Minister Hon. Vanderpuje who represented the Minister Hon. Julius Debrah, Dr.
Prince Pambo, Head of the Medical Directorate of the NSA and the Acting
Director – General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Madam Alice Attipoe,
Erasmus Adorkor, the Chief Sports Development Officer and Dr. Vera Opata, an HIV
AIDS coordinator in Ghana.
