‘Kingson’s recall good decision’

Former Ghana goalkeeper William Amamoo has hailed the return of veteran shot-stopper Richard Kingson to the Black Stars.

The Doxa Katokopias keeper has been given a call-up ahead of the crucial first-leg World Cup play-off against Egypt on October 15. He was relieved of national duties two years ago after losing his job with Blackpool.

The Sweden-based gloves man has defended coach Kwesi Appiah’s decision to recall the safest pair of hands who manned the post for the four-time African champions at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

“It’s a good decision to recall Richard Kingson,” Amamoo exclusively told Goal Ghana. “Ghana have not found a real replacement since he left the team.”

He argued that age is not an issue as far as goalkeepers are concerned and they get on top of their game as they grow, adding the young keepers in the team should not be sidelined with Kingson’s return.

Amamoo added: “If we could remember, the second coming of Bukhard saw Eddy Ansah [former goalkeeper of Ghana] who was almost 40 in the Black Stars starting line-up.

“Goalkeepers get better with age. But the management of the team should still be rotating the other keepers during friendlies to send a signal that they have not been totally left out. I will urge all Ghanaians to rally behind the team and respect the decision of the FA calling Richard.”
