Kumasi Goes Gay

JUBILANT SUPPORTERS of Kumasi Asante Kotoko last Sunday evening filled the streets of Kumasi to celebrate their team’s qualification to the finals of this year’s African Cup Winners Cup competition at the expense of A.S. Police of Congo.

Right after the blast of the Zimbabwean referee’s whistle to signal the end of a rather easy second-leg semi-finals encounter which was monitored in Kumasi, courtesy Kapital Radio and Fox FM, fans of the galant fighters poured into some principal streets in jubilation amidst tooting of car horns by drivers and merry-making.

Others clothed themselves in the team’s colours and hanged dangerously on moving vehicles chanting victory songs and slogans in celebration of Kotoko’s final berth. Some drinking bars and spots recorded great sales as elated fans thronged bars, danced and drank the night away.

In areas like Suame and Santasi, fire works lit the night skies whilst children and women danced to brass-band music. Like their heroes, some elated fans we contacted, expressed great joy and attributed their qualification to God’s making, and expressed the hope that similar success would be their lot in subsequent matches.

It could be recalled that barely two weeks ago, Kotoko chalked a 4-0 drubbing over A.S. Police of Congo in the first-leg semi-final of this year’s Mandela Cup at the Kumasi Sports Stadium.
