Ghana beat UK to win Independence Polo Cup

MBG Ghana played a determined game to overcome the fierce resistance of Virgin Atlantic UK to emerge winners of a thrilling game of Polo and earn the bragging rights as champions of the 2013 Vodafone Independence Polo championship.

Such was the intensity and competitiveness of the polo match last Saturday at the Accra Polo Club, it was closely fought until Team Ghana managed to stamp their authority in the final stages of the game to eventually run out 7-4 winners to retain the trophy they beat the same side to win last year.

Amid pomp and pageantry, the polo match couldn’t have served a more competitive game which was rightly acknowledged by the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Peter Jones who confessed that he was the newest fan to the sport played on horses.

“I’m proud to say this is my first ever Polo match and I look forward to more because I really enjoyed it. It was great fun, exciting and very competitive. It’s certainly encouraged me to watch Polo again and I will try to come again next year,” Mr. Jones said in his closing remarks.

Sponsored by Vodafone Ghana, MBG, Virgin Atlantic Airlines and Cavaliere Pazzo, the MBG Ghana Team featured Jamil Ibrahim (captain), George Agyemang, Agyemang Darko and Eric Gene who triumphed over the Virgin Atlantic UK side comprising Benjie Davis, Ben de Rivaz, Santi Boudou and Hugo Davis.

Harold Darko, Captain of the Accra Polo Club expressed appreciation to the sponsors for continuously supporting the annual Independence Polo tournament amid revealing that they have now opened a training school for potential Polo players to enroll.

“A big thank you to our sponsors, Vodafone, Virgin Atlantic and MBG, we are forever grateful. Also a big thank you to all of you for coming here, it’s been a wonderful day and we hope you all enjoyed yourselves,” Mr. Awuah-darko said.

He continued: “We are glad to announce that we now have a training school for Polo so you can bring your children to learn and before you realize, they will be playing Polo.”
