Nyarko's nightmare worried Nigerian star

New-boy Joseph Yobo was "afraid to come to Everton" after hearing about Alex Nyarko's problems but was reassured by manager David Moyes. Yobo, still just 21, is on an initial 12-month deal with the Toffees but the plan is to extend the contract to five years come next summer.

However, the Nigerian international has revealed his fears about signing for the club, having heard of the way some supporters treated Nyarko towards the end of the 2000/01 season.

During a match at Highbury in April of last year, an away fan remonstrated with the Ghanaian and tried to wrest his shirt away in a protest at his performance. Nyarko was shipped out on loan to Monaco last season and has now joined Paris Saint-Germain.

"When I first spoke to David Moyes, I discussed the problems they have had with black players," revealed Yobo. "When I saw what happened to Nyarko, I was afraid to come to Everton. I spoke with David Moyes about my concerns and I was very happy with our discussion.

"But I suppose the fans will be kind to you if you perform well, so that's my ambition."
