Wakaso brands La Liga refs 'racist'

Black Stars winger Mubarak Wakaso has made a stunning claim that the Spanish top fliight has racist refs. The Espanyol winger says Spanish referees are biased against black players.

Speaking before this weekend's La Liga clash, the former Villareal man hinted that black bias may have been a reason why his side have been victims of some controversial refereeing decisions this season.

"I am sorry to say, but referees draw cards based on the colour of your skin," the former AshGold midfielder said.

Although against Valencia last Saturday, Espanyol had two men sent off and a last minute penalty awarded against them, it must be mentioned, however, that he has had more than a brush with the law this season.

Mubarak has got six yellow cards and one red, making him the most indisciplined player in La Liga, by the numbers alone. But his view remains that punishment is meted out based on colour of skin.

"I think they respect some players and not others. The game at Mestalla was rubbish. Only against Osasuna did we deserve to lose. Every other game was influenced by the referee."

Mubarak Wakaso is being considered for Ghana's African Cup of Nations squad, following his debut in October and a goal against Portugal on his second outing. He has been named as a potential solution to Ghana's left back issues as well.
