Keep Fit Club Undertake Republic Day walk

A 20 kilometer walk with the theme WALK AIDS OUT organized by the El-Wak Keep Fit Club in conjunction with Visco Walking Club, which saw participants do the distance meandering through some principal streets of Accra, was held over the weekend under the most colorful and relaxed sporting manner.

The event attracted a total of 30 other sister Keep Fit Clubs spread around the city who arrived by the bus loads to the El-Wak Stadium, the starting point where it all began.

Looking smart and sporty in their tee-shirts and other sporting costume, the participants who had a bit of company from VISCO WALKING CLUB meandered their way through 37 Military Hospital, Gold House, Kanda Highway, Holy Spirit Cathedral, TUC, National Theatre, Ministries, Castle Junction, Osu Oxford Street, Togo Embassy and ended at the El-Wak stadium.

Significantly, the participants distributed leaflets on HIV/AIDS and held placards some of which read TSOO BOOI! AIDS IS COMING CONTROL YOUR THING, YOU HAVE A LIFE TO LIVE AVOID AIDS, AIDS IS REAL WALK PROTECTED, AIDS IS A REAL MENACE TO SOCIETY among others.

According to the organizers, they chose this material time to do the walk just to bring to the fore and alert the public on the dangers of the incurable disease, whose rise in terms of numbers among the productive age is on the ascendancy.

Among the walkers was probably the oldest of the lot Mrs. Elizabeth Peterson 62 and the youngest, a six year old boy by name Emmanuel Nyamekye who both significantly completed the distance very admirably.

After the two hour walk, certificates of participation were distributed to the clubs after which a 30 minute talk on HIV/AIDS was delivered by an expert on the disease.

Sponsors of the walk were Voltic Ghana Limited, Beverages International, Western Union Money Transfer and Esthetical Services who, aside of the original sponsorship, went beyond that to provide other things.

In the competitive category, walkers who are preparing for the World Walking Cup in Italy this year also took part including J. N. Kwofie from the Takoradi, Stanley Briamah, Ekow Rambo, K. Benjamin Annan, Joshua Acquah all from Cape Coast, Atta Bright, Prince Frimpong from Kumasi, Musah Mudah, Anthony Adjei and Yaw Fordjour all of Accra, Francis Yankah and the national ace walker Vincent Asumang all of the Ghana National Fire Service.
