Kotey Neequaye faces Flores Jr in New York

Ghana’s Samuel Kotey Neequaye fights in the United States of America for the first time on Saturday night when he takes to the ring against Frederico Flores Jr. in a Light welterweight contest at the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York.

The Ghanaian with a perfect record of 17-0, 14 knockouts, was originally scheduled for the ten round main event against Santos Pakau who pulled out at the last minute due to a leg injury. Pakau has been replaced by 24 year old Flores Jr. (7-4-1, 2 KOs) in what will also be Neequaye’s first fight at Light Welterweight.

29 year old Neequaye has vowed to add his name to Ghana’s legendary list of great boxers including Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, D.K. Poison, Joshua Clottey and Joseph Agbeko by becoming a world champion. His move to the country he calls the ‘Mecca of boxing’, he says, is the first step towards realizing the world title dream.

“It’s a long journey but I am determined to keep on fighting hard till the end. There is no turning back now, I have been impressed with all the facilities and opportunities available here in the US and I know with hard work I can make it,” Neequaye told www.sportsinghana.com from his US base. Samuel Kotey who has been training fervently in Baltimore, Maryland since arriving in the US and is managed by Stephen Darko, added: “I know I have to work harder, I’m ready to keep learning and improving until I become world champion. I promise to always make Ghanaians proud so they should keep on praying for me.”
