Eastern Regional Basic Schools Sports Festival begins at Nkawkaw

Nkawkaw, July 7, GNA - The 31st Eastern Regional U-15 Zone Two Basic Schools Sports Festival began at Nkawkaw on Thursday in the Kwahu West Municipality.

Over 1,000 athletes and players from eleven of the 21 Districts are to participate in football, netball, volleyball, handball, athletics and table tennis.

The participating are Kwahu West, West Akyem, Birim Central, Kwahu South, Kwahu East, Birim North, Birim South, East Akyem, Kwahu North, Akyemmansa and Atiwa.

The other ten Districts which constitute Zone One are also to assembly at Somanya for a similar event.

The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Mrs Rene Boakye-Boaten in an address at the opening ceremony, said sports played special role in children's social and physical development.

She therefore advised teachers, parents and other sports officials to guide school children to develop their talents to contribute towards the nation's development.

Mrs Boakye-Boaten urged the organizers and the officiating officials to ensure fair play to enable the children develop their skills to win more laurels for their various districts.

She also advised the children to comport themselves and display high sense of discipline to enable them excel in their various sports disciplines.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Alex Somuah Obeng, said sports has become an integral part of the Ghanaian culture which had resulted in social change, new behaviour pattern and ensured peaceful co-existence.

Mr Obeng said the government has rekindled the organization of the National Day Games into Unity Games to bring all Ghanaians together as one family to identify potential athletes and players to develop them for national events.

In an opening football match, Kwahu West Municipality defeated West Akyem Municipality by a lone goal.
