Gyan to miss rest of season

Ghana striker Asamoah is set to miss the rest of the season in England, Sunderland coach Steve Bruce has revealed.

But he should be ready for Ghana when they play Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Accra in June.

The Black Cats boss revealed as the Ghanaian and Danny Welbeck both players were substituted during the 4-2 win over Wigan on Saturday

Welbeck picked up a hamstring problem early in the victory over the Latics and has returned to Manchester for a scan.

A similar complaint resulted in Gyan being stretchered from the field in the second half and he is currently being treated by medical staff.

Now Bruce is facing up to potentially being without both his senior strikers for the remaining four games – against Fulham, Bolton, Wolves and West Ham.

“We’ve lost Welbeck and Gyan and it’s unlikely they’ll play again this season,” he explained.

“It’s all over three weeks on Saturday. The collateral damage has been huge.

“The win was the most important thing for us last Saturday but, for me, it still doesn’t hide the facts of the game.

“I’ve had to make substitutions before half time again and that’s the big thing. We have to find out why.

“Yes, we’re back on track a little with the win but we’ve still only got 13 or 14 players training instead of 24, which is a sad situation.”
