Ghanaian coach James Kwasi Appiah led Sudan to their first victory over Ethiopia to kick off the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Sudan defeated Ethiopia 1-0 at the Juba National Stadium in a keenly contested match that was decided late on.

Due to the ongoing civil war in Sudan, the Falcons of Jediane are playing their home games in the South Sudanese capital to avoid disruptions and chaos.

Sudan scored the decisive goal through Eisa five minutes before the end of the game. The free-agent attacker calmly converted a penalty to hand Sudan all three points.

Kwasi Appiah’s men are currently top of Group J with three points. The team is preparing to face Mozambique in their next game, while Ethiopia will take on Senegal in Bahir Dar.

Kwasi Appiah is determined to secure a second consecutive qualification for the AFCON after guiding Sudan to the previous edition in 2025.

The former Black Stars coach guided the team to the Round of 16, where they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Senegal. Another clash is set to take place as the two teams find themselves in the same group.
