Former Nigeria international Obafemi Martins has reiterated his belief that he was one of the fastest footballers in the world during his prime.

The 41-year-old ex-striker made the claim while appearing on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by his former Nigeria teammate John Obi Mikel.

Martins was asked whether he considered himself faster than renowned forwards such as Thierry Henry, Brazilian legend Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé.

The former Inter Milan attacker was emphatic about his ability to accelerate, particularly over short distances.

“No, I don’t think so, it’s explosive. In my prime, no one. Not even Henry, Cristiano, no,” he said.

He then turned to Mikel, asking his former international teammate to support his claim based on what he had witnessed during their time together with the Super Eagles.

Mikel agreed that Martins was exceptionally quick.

“You were quick, honestly,” Mikel said.

He followed up by asking whether Martins believed his acceleration over the first 10 to 15 metres was impossible for other players to match.

Martins confirmed that he did.

The striker’s extraordinary pace also became famous in the virtual world through Pro Evolution Soccer (PES), where he was given the maximum rating of 99 for both acceleration and top speed.

His speed was a defining feature of his career, particularly during his time at Inter Milan.

Martins helped the Italian giants win the 2005/06 Serie A title and two consecutive Coppa Italia trophies in 2004/05 and 2005/06.
