Malawi have reached their first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final after beating Algeria 3-1 in a dramatic semi-final clash in Rabat.

The Scorchers, competing at the WAFCON for the first time, produced another impressive performance to continue their remarkable run in Morocco.

Tabitha Chawinga opened the scoring for Malawi in the 33rd minute, firing a left-footed strike that went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Her sister Temwa Chawinga then doubled Malawi’s advantage in first-half stoppage time, rounding the Algerian goalkeeper before finishing into an empty net.

Both sides were reduced to ten players before the break, with Algeria’s Morgane Belkhiter sent off in the 23rd minute before Malawi’s Rose Kadzere was also shown a red card in stoppage time.

Algeria pulled one back through Ikram Adjabi in the 60th minute, giving the North Africans hope of a comeback.

But Tabitha Chawinga struck again in the 76th minute, squeezing her effort between an Algerian defender’s legs to restore Malawi’s two-goal advantage.

The 3-1 victory sends Malawi into the WAFCON final in what is already a historic debut campaign.
