Corinthians fans have reacted angrily after the Brazilian club unexpectedly ended talks over a new contract for Memphis Depay, despite a renewal appearing close to completion.

The Dutch forward’s existing deal expired at the end of July, and negotiations had progressed to the point where a two-year extension was reportedly agreed. However, Corinthians announced on Tuesday, 11, 2026, that they would not renew his contract, citing the club’s financial situation.

The decision has sparked an immediate backlash from supporters, many of whom questioned the board’s explanation and accused the leadership of mismanagement.

Several fans took aim at president Osmar Stabile, while others compared the club’s decision to its willingness to carry expensive contracts elsewhere in the squad.

One supporter questioned how Corinthians could claim to be concerned about financial health while continuing to pay players such as Pedro Raul, while another criticised the board for allowing the renewal saga to drag on for weeks.

Depay himself has also hit back at the club, claiming that the two-year extension had already been agreed by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial departments before the commitment was withdrawn.

The 32-year-old leaves Corinthians after playing a significant role in the club’s recent success.

He made 79 appearances and scored 20 goals, helping them win the Paulista championship and Copa do Brasil in 2025 before adding the Supercopa Rei in 2026.
