NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah has explained his decision to participate in the 2024 Save Ghana Football campaign, which submitted a petition to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Speaking in an interview on Sports Check on GhanaWebTV, Ampofo Ankrah said his involvement in the campaign was motivated by his identity as a Ghanaian, football stakeholder and sports administrator.

He clarified that he was invited to join the campaign and accepted the invitation because he believed the concerns being raised about Ghana football deserved to be heard.

He explained that his presence should not be interpreted as an endorsement of every issue raised by the campaign, but rather as a show of respect for the concerns of football stakeholders and an interest in finding solutions to challenges confronting the sport.

“I accepted their invitation because as a Ghanaian first and foremost, as a football person, as a sports administrator, whatever happens in the ecosystem affects me”he explained.

According to him, although only a section of the campaigners were physically demonstrating or voicing their concerns, there were millions of other Ghanaians who shared similar worries about the state of football in the country.

He said he therefore considered it important to pay attention to those concerns and demonstrate a willingness to engage.

“It is a sign of respect, not necessarily that I am aligned with maybe the core issues, but I am aligned with looking for answers and solutions to some of the football problems that we have,” he said.

Ampofo Ankrah maintained that his position has always been to support efforts to improve Ghana football, regardless of the group or individuals raising the concerns.

“Regardless of where it's coming from, if the core issue is Ghana football and how to improve it, I would always avail myself,” he added.
