The coach of Team Ghana’s boxing team at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Ofori Asare, has disclosed that there were insufficient equipment for the athletes, compelling them to share during the event.

According to him, the boxers had to share gloves, boots, and shorts among themselves to compensate for the shortage across the squad and avoid embarrassment.

He noted that although the practice was unhealthy and did not put the athletes in a good position, he had to compel them to compromise in order to represent the nation.

“We had our own challenges. Some of the boxers had to share boxing boots, gloves, and shorts, among other equipment, which was very stressful and unhygienic. As a coach, I had to ask the boxers to share because that was the only way we could move forward,” he told JoySports in an interview.

Asare further revealed that Ghana’s participation nearly suffered a major setback due to documentation-related issues, warning that the team came very close to being disqualified.

“We were expecting them to provide us with the necessary equipment because that was what we had been told. The Ghana team could have been disqualified because of the documentation issues,” Coach Asare added.

This comes after criticisms were directed at the coach for poor managerial skills, which led to the team winning just a bronze medal in boxing under his watch. He, however, believes authorities should be held accountable, not him or the boxers.
