The team manager of Uganda at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Godwin Kayangwe, has said he is not aware of the reasons behind the disappearance of four boxers after the Games.

Boxers Ibrahim Kemis (20), Nuhu Batte (22), Emily Nakalema (32), and Angel Katushabe (21) were scheduled to fly back to Uganda on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. However, they failed to join the flight home.

Speaking on the situation, Kayangwe disclosed that the athletes had promised to return with the team but later switched off their mobile phones without informing their immediate managers.

Kayangwe admitted he had no idea why they disappeared but suspected they were “probably still in Glasgow or somewhere in Europe.”

“I don’t know anything about why they decided not to fly home, but I know they communicated with their team manager and said they would be coming back. After that, their phones went off, so they have definitely broken camp rules because no athlete is supposed to leave without permission. Their visas are still valid until October,” he said.

He further added that he does not know the athletes’ motivation for taking such action, urging them to return home since their visas remain valid and they would be welcomed back.

“I have totally no idea, absolutely no idea what type of asylum they would be seeking. It’s nothing political, it’s nothing to do with gender or anything like that. I have absolutely no idea why they would be doing this. My message is clear: observe the law and make sure the visa does not expire while you are still here. Come back to Uganda, and they can probably return to Europe whenever they want,” Kayangwe added.
