Ugandan footballer David Owori has died after suspected robbers allegedly attacked and beat him near his home in Kampala, following his reported resistance to an attempt to steal his belongings.

The 27-year-old SC Villa captain was attacked on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in Makindye, a suburb of the Ugandan capital.

Witnesses said a group of assailants struck him with paving stones before taking his belongings and fleeing the scene.

Owori was left unconscious and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to a nearby medical clinic before being transferred to a private medical facility, where he died on Wednesday.

SC Villa spokesperson Asan Kasingye said the footballer was attacked as he approached his home.

"The player was ambushed by thugs as he approached his home, leaving him with life-threatening injuries before he was rushed to the medical facility," Kasingye said.

Police have launched an investigation into the killing, with detectives working to identify those behind the attack.
Local police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said investigators had already secured evidence from the scene.

"The scene of the incident has been documented and processed to ensure that all relevant evidence is collected and preserved," Kawala added.

The defender, popularly known as Colgate, was captain of record Uganda Premier League champions SC Villa and could also play in midfield.

He returned to the club in 2023 after a two-year spell in Europe and helped them win the 2024 league title, their first in two decades.

He also represented Uganda's national team, the Cranes.
The incident comes only weeks after Ugandan rugby international Sydney Gongodyo was reportedly killed in a separate attack in Kampala.
