There was a period when Daniel-Kofi Kyereh seemed to be everywhere in Ghanaian football conversations.

His name travelled home from Germany, carried by the performances of a young midfielder who had suddenly become impossible to ignore.

Week after week, Kyereh was producing the kind of football that made Ghanaian fans sit up: goals, assists, clever movement and an effortless ability to glide through games.

That was how Kyereh became a household name.

Before his German adventure, he was largely an unfamiliar name to the wider Ghanaian public. But his exploits with St. Pauli changed that.

For a player whose stock was rising so quickly, the future looked almost limitless.

The 2021/22 season was the clearest indication of what was coming. Kyereh scored 12 goals and provided 10 assists in 32 Bundesliga 2 appearances, form that earned him a move to Freiburg and strengthened his place in the Ghana national team.

He had also become a Black Stars regular, making his international debut in 2021 before being selected for Ghana’s 2022 World Cup squad.

Everything appeared to be moving in one direction. Then, in February 2023, his body betrayed him.

A serious ACL injury brought his momentum crashing down.

What followed was not merely a period of rehabilitation, but a seemingly endless battle to return to the footballer he had been.

Kyereh underwent surgery and later suffered another setback that required further treatment. The months became years.

At one point, the footballer admitted that retirement had crossed his mind.

“To be honest, I was fighting against those thoughts. The truth is that they came up here and there,” he revealed in an interview.

He eventually returned to action with Freiburg’s U23 side in April 2026, more than three years after his injury. Freiburg confirmed that he would leave the club at the end of the 2025/26 season.

His comeback contained a small glimpse of the old Kyereh. In eight appearances for Freiburg II, he contributed two goals and two assists.

But by then, football had moved on.
The player who once looked destined for a much bigger stage was now fighting simply to find another club.

That is perhaps the cruelest part of Kyereh’s story.

At 30, he is not finished. Far from it. But football careers are built on rhythm, momentum and availability, and the ACL injury took all three away from him at the very moment his career was beginning to take off.

He once dreamed of representing Ghana at the 2026 World Cup. After nearly three years away, that dream ultimately disappeared as well.

Now, Kyereh stands at another crossroads.

He is a free agent, searching for a club willing to believe that the player who once electrified St. Pauli and earned his place among Ghana’s most exciting talents is still somewhere inside him.

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about Kyereh’s story is not that he failed.
It is that we never got to see just how good he could have become.
