Legendary Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan has described the fierce football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria as passionate competition that reflects the friendship and bond between the two countries.

He explained that Nigerians often wish for the Black Stars to lose so they can ridicule and criticize them on social media, and Ghanaians do the same in return.

The former Sunderland striker noted that despite the fierce nature of the rivalry, citizens of both countries coexist well and maintain strong ties.

Speaking in an interview with SuperSport, Gyan emphasized that the banter has always been entertaining, carrying no malice but instead serving as an opportunity for fans to engage and connect.

“One thing about Ghana and Nigeria is we have that banter. It’s like two brothers, one doesn’t want the other to win, but it doesn’t mean we don’t love each other. When Ghana is playing, Nigerians wait for us to lose so they can tease us. Likewise, we also wait for them to lose. That love is natural,” he said.

Ghana and Nigeria have long shared playful banter on social media, particularly involving the Black Stars and the Super Eagles, as well as debates over who makes the best jollof.
