GhanaWeb Sports Editor, Joel Eshun, will lead the organization's coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking his second consecutive assignment as the head of the platform's World Cup reporting team.
Joel Eshun previously spearheaded GhanaWeb's coverage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the media outlet achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first digital media platform in Ghana to livestream a dedicated World Cup commentary show.
The initiative provided football fans with real-time analysis, expert opinions, and comprehensive coverage throughout the tournament.
As preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, GhanaWeb is set to deliver extensive coverage across its digital platforms, with a strong focus on the Ghana national football team, African representatives, and the tournament's traditional football powerhouses.
Speaking on the assignment, Eshun expressed his excitement about leading the coverage once again and highlighted GhanaWeb's commitment to delivering timely, engaging, and insightful content to football fans across Ghana and beyond.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be hosted by United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to be the largest edition of the tournament, featuring 48 teams for the first time in history.
Under Joel Eshun's leadership, GhanaWeb aims to provide fans with in-depth match analysis, exclusive interviews, live commentary programs, feature stories, and behind-the-scenes content, ensuring audiences remain connected to every major development from football's biggest stage.

About Joel Eshun:
Joel Eshun grew up with a deep passion for sports and a dream of becoming the most renowned journalist to emerge from his hometown.
With over six years of experience in the media industry, his journey began in 2017 when he enrolled at the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), now the University of Media Arts and Communications (UNIMAC), to pursue a Bachelor of Communications with a specialization in Journalism.
While at GIJ, Joel started as a news reporter for the campus radio station, Radio GIJ 97.9, before joining the sports desk as a presenter and analyst on the station’s afternoon sports show.
In June–July 2018, he gained international exposure when he served as a reporter and production assistant during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia as an intern with Hello FM, a subsidiary of the Despite Media Group.

In April 2019, seeking broader practical experience, Joel joined Primeval Media GH, where he worked as both a writer and broadcaster. Later that year, he joined GhanaWeb in September 2019 as a volunteer.
Through dedication and consistent performance, he rose from volunteer to full-time staff after graduating with a Degree in Communications in 2021.
At GhanaWeb, Joel excelled as a writer and commentator before being appointed head of the newly established commentary desk, responsible for coverage of major tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
He successfully led his team to cover the 2021 AFCON and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, making GhanaWeb the first digital media platform in Ghana to broadcast live commentary shows.
He also hosted the Sports Debate show on GhanaWeb’s YouTube channel, one of the station’s best-performing programs, consistently attracting strong viewership.
In April 2023, Joel concluded his chapter at GhanaWeb to explore new opportunities in broadcast media and expand his presence in the content creation space.
He briefly worked with Faculty TV and Rainbow Radio Accra before joining Happy FM, under the Global Media Alliance Broadcasting Company, in February 2024 as a Media Executive.

At Happy FM, Joel primarily served as a news writer and producer, while also contributing as a sports presenter and analyst on the station’s flagship program, Happy Sports. He later became the deputy editor of the fact-check desk and also hosted public activations for clients.
Although Joel enjoyed his time at Happy FM, destiny had other plans.
In August 2025, he returned to GhanaWeb, this time not as a volunteer, but as a Senior Journalist and Sports Editor, returning to the platform that nurtured his early steps in the media industry.
When Joel is not writing or talking about sports, he spends his free time watching movies or relaxing at the beach, where he enjoys nature while sipping a refreshing non-alcoholic cocktail.
Joel was born to Charles Eshun and Benedicta Baiden. He has one brother, Emmanuel, and four sisters: Ruth, Mary, Patricia, and Gloria.
