Ghanaian coach and football pundit Christopher Nimley has called on the Black Stars to rally behind Thomas Partey following reports that England's Football Association is considering its approach to the traditional pre-match handshake before the two countries meet at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Reports in England this week suggested that FA officials could discuss how England players handle the customary pre-match greetings with the Ghana midfielder ahead of the Group L clash on June 23.
The issue has attracted widespread debate because Partey is due to stand trial in the United Kingdom over allegations he has denied.
Reacting to the reports, Nimley said Ghana should show solidarity with one of its most experienced players.
"To hell with them if they don't want to shake Thomas Partey's hand," Nimley said on Sporty FM.
"No Black Stars player should shake any English player's hand either. Let's protect our star player, Thomas Partey."
The comments come as discussions continue around Partey's participation at the World Cup after coach Carlos Queiroz included the Villarreal midfielder in Ghana's final 26-man squad.
Partey remains one of the most influential figures in the Black Stars setup and is expected to play a key role in Ghana's bid to progress from a difficult group that also includes Panama and Croatia.
The potential handshake controversy has added another layer of intrigue to what is already one of Ghana's most anticipated group-stage matches.
England and Ghana will meet in Boston on June 23, with both teams expected to be battling for a place in the knockout stages.
For Nimley, however, the focus should remain on football and on ensuring that the Black Stars stand united behind one of their senior players as they prepare for the tournament.
