Black Starlets winger Abdul Latif Wunzalgu has been named Man of the Match following his outstanding performance in Ghana’s heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Uganda in the FIFA U17 World Cup qualification play-off at the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The talented winger was one of Ghana’s brightest performers throughout the contest, providing the assist for Ghana’s opening goal in the game.
Wunzalgu crowned his impressive display with Ghana’s second goal of the evening after the break, restoring the Black Starlets’ lead in what appeared to be the winning moment for the Ghanaian side.
Beyond his goal, the forward played a major role in Ghana’s attacking play, linking up effectively with teammates and repeatedly stretching the Ugandan defense with dangerous runs.
The Black Starlets had initially opened the scoring through Eric Adu Gyamfi before Uganda equalized prior to halftime. Wunzalgu’s strike after the break once again put Ghana in front before Uganda leveled late in the game through a penalty kick.
The match eventually went into a dramatic penalty shootout, where Uganda edged Ghana 8-7 to secure qualification to the FIFA U17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Despite the painful defeat, Wunzalgu’s excellent individual display earned him deserved recognition as the standout player of the encounter.
The Black Starlets will now turn attention to rebuilding ahead of the next qualification campaign, with the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship scheduled for September.
