Former Ghana Football Association president, Kwesi Nyantakyi has called for greater support for prison inmates following a major outreach programme at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

Speaking during the visit, Nyantakyi explained that the initiative was designed not only to donate items but also to restore hope and support the rehabilitation of inmates.

“This project has many dimensions,” he said. “It is about giving hope to those who are there, including those who are living on themselves, trying to find legal representation for some whose cases can be taken up at the law court for them to be free.”

According to Nyantakyi, the project goes beyond simply paying fines for inmates and instead focuses on long-term support, including legal aid, feeding, clothing and rehabilitation.

He stressed that the initiative was unique and should not be compared to similar projects.

“This is multi-faceted and I don’t want to compare it to anybody’s project. This is unique,” he added.

As part of the donations, the delegation presented over 30 footballs, more than 15 sets of jerseys, bibs and other sporting equipment to support football activities within the prison.

Nyantakyi also urged corporate Ghana to extend more support to sports development and rehabilitation programmes, noting that even Ghana’s domestic football leagues continue to struggle with sponsorship challenges.
