A rare video of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, speaking with Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan at the Baba Yara Stadium has resurfaced.
The moment which became one of the most talked-about scenes in Ghana football history, saw the Asantehene having a pep talk with the former teammates during what was believed to be rising tension within the Black Stars camp.
At the time, Asamoah Gyan was the captain of the national team, while André Ayew was seen as the heir apparent, eventually taking over the armband after Gyan’s gradual exit from international duty.
Reports had suggested a strained relationship between the two influential figures, fueling speculation of division within the squad.

During a Black Stars fixture at Baba Yara Stadium, cameras captured a symbolic moment when the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, engaged both players on the pitch in a calm but firm exchange.
The interaction was widely interpreted as a “ceasefire” moment, a royal intervention aimed at restoring unity in the national team.
The video shows a respectful atmosphere as Otumfuo addressed both players, with Gyan and Ayew listening attentively while surrounded by teammates and officials.
The moment carried huge emotional weight, especially given their leadership roles and the expectations on the Black Stars at the time.
Although neither player ever publicly detailed the full content of the discussion, the symbolism was clear: Ghana’s football unity was bigger than individual rivalries.
The Black Stars went on to maintain relative calm within the squad in the following years, with Ayew eventually inheriting the captaincy and Gyan stepping aside as one of Ghana’s greatest-ever forwards.
