Black Stars assistant coach, Roger De Sá has said that he has no intentions of interfering in Ghana’s goalkeeping department despite his history as a former professional goalkeeper.

Speaking on Beyond the Whistle, De Sá explained that modern football has evolved significantly and specialist goalkeeper coaches are now better equipped to manage that area of the team.

“I stopped coaching goalkeepers a long time ago,” he admitted.

“The last time I coached a goalkeeper was about 20 years ago, so I would probably look like a grandpa giving training sessions.”

The former South African international revealed that although he naturally keeps an eye on the position because of his playing background, his responsibilities within the Black Stars technical team go far beyond one department.

“I look at the goalkeepers just like I look at every other position now,” he stated.

According to De Sá, one of the biggest lessons he has learned in coaching is respecting the expertise of other staff members.

“You have a goalkeeper coach that takes charge of that. It would be foolish to interfere in other people’s business,” he added.

The assistant coach stressed that his current role under Carlos Queiroz is focused more on analysis, structure and helping the head coach make key decisions.

“He likes hearing my opinion, but in the end it’s his decision. My job is to support and provide another set of eyes,” De Sá explained.
