Sky Sports chief reporter, Kaveh Solhekol has criticised the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) over the excessively high ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup.
He revealed that his recent checks showed a ticket listed for $11.5 million on FIFA’s official resale platform at the MetLife Stadium in the United States.
The veteran journalist fumed that the section of the stadium where the ticket was being sold was not an exceptional area, describing it as “one of the worst tickets in the stadium.”
'I wouldn't pay it either' - Trump fumes over $1,000 World Cup tickets
“Today we were looking on FIFA’s official resale platform for people who have World Cup tickets and want to resell those tickets. And what we found was one ticket which was for sale for $11.5 million, that is £8.5 million. And also, it’s not even a very good ticket. I’ve been to the MetLife Stadium. It’s one of the worst tickets in the stadium. It’s behind the goal, in the corner.
"It could just be somebody who’s doing it for a laugh or somebody who’s doing it to create a headline. But what they are doing is shining a light again on a very, very serious issue, which is why FIFA is allowing these kinds of prices to be asked for, to be set on one of their own official platforms?” he questioned.
Solhekol further revealed that FIFA benefits from these prices, taking 30% of the revenue from each sale.
He noted that although FIFA claims to reinvest funds into the game, the organization should control ticket prices for the sake of fans and stakeholders.
“We’ve contacted FIFA for comment today. They haven’t got back to us yet, but previously they’ve always said, ‘FIFA, we’re a not-for-profit organization, so all the money we make is reinvested into the game.’ They also, I think, would say they have no control over the prices that people set.
"Also, don’t forget that if anyone was to spend £8.5 million on this ticket, FIFA would get their cut because they get 30% commission. If somebody was to pay £8.5 million, FIFA would make a commission of £2.5 million on that particular ticket sale because they take 15% from the buyer and also 15% from the seller,” he added.
