FIFA considering yellow card amnesty after group stage for 2026 World Cup

Yellow card suspension rule is set to be reviewed by FIFA ahead of the World Cup Yellow card suspension rule is set to be reviewed by FIFA ahead of the World Cup

The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) is considering changes to the yellow card suspension rules by erasing them after the group stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Normally, at the tournament, if a player receives yellow cards in two matches before the quarter-finals, they are suspended due to accumulation.

Also, when a player receives two bookings, either both in the group stage or one in the group stage and another before the quarter-final, the player will miss the next game his team plays.

However, FIFA officials are said to be reconsidering the rule on yellow cards. With the number of teams increased to 48, there will now be a Round of 32, which expands the number of matches to about seven before the final.

Because of this, officials are deliberating on wiping all yellow cards at the end of the group stage and again at the quarter-finals.

This move is intended to prevent situations where teams lose key players during the knockout stages and to ensure that the best players have the opportunity to compete for laurels at the tournament.

However, the red card rule is expected to remain the same: players shown a direct red card will miss the next game, with punishments possibly extended depending on the severity of the incident.

The FIFA Council is scheduled to meet on April 28, 2026, in Vancouver to address critical updates for the 2026 World Cup, including the potential yellow-card amnesty under the expanded 48-team format and increased financial contributions for participating nations.
