Patrice Motsepe has held talks with Bassirou Diomaye Faye in Dakar as tensions continue over the controversial decision that stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.
The President of the Confederation of African Football arrived in Senegal’s capital on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, stating that his visit was primarily to support the country’s football leadership.
While he did not directly address the details of the ruling that overturned the AFCON final result, Motsepe acknowledged growing concerns about confidence in football governance.
He admitted that some decisions by referees and CAF’s judicial bodies had not enjoyed the level of credibility and respect the organisation expects, an issue he said must be addressed to maintain trust in African football.

The controversy stems from the chaotic AFCON final in January 2026, when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch during a tense moment following a disputed penalty awarded to Morocco.
The interruption came as fans clashed with stewards behind one of the goals. Senegal eventually returned to the field, Morocco missed the penalty, and the match ended with Senegal winning after extra time.
However, in March 2026, CAF’s Appeals Board ruled that Senegal had forfeited the final by leaving the field without the referee’s authorisation and awarded Morocco a 3–0 victory.
The Senegalese Football Federation has since appealed the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.
