The 2026 prestigious bike race, Ride Afrique Accra Criterium, ended on a high note at the Accra Sports Stadium, with Nigerian cyclist Joseph David Ayibakuro emerging as the overall winner in the men’s 30 laps of 105 km.

The event, which attracted over 200 male and female cyclists from across the country and Africa, aimed to empower cyclists and promote and develop the sport.

Joseph Ayibakuro dazzled the crowd with his pace and power from the start, riding through the designated principal streets. Strategically, he maintained his composure and control throughout the race to cross the finish line.

Speaking after the race, Ayibakuro expressed his appreciation to his teammates and the organisers for putting up the event. According to him, Ride Afrique has, over the years, transformed the lives of cyclists through its empowerment programme.

“I want to appreciate my teammates; they did everything for me. The strategy we used was all about teamwork, so without the teamwork, I wouldn’t have been a winner today. Ride Afrique is a very fantastic event and has made us who we are today; it’s a good initiative for cyclists, and I’m grateful to the organisers,” he stated.

Since its inception in 2019, the Ride Afrique Accra Criterium has produced national champions, underscoring its significance as an annual household and continental event.

According to Richard Agu, the CEO of the Ride Afrique cycling project, next year’s project will feature larger, improved structures. He indicated that cyclists need such platforms to improve their performances and ranking.

Agu expressed profound gratitude to the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, for gracing the race and throwing his weight behind its success.

“…next year, hopefully, we’ll see the Chief Imam here again, or I’ll bring someone else; it could be the president himself. Every year, we plan to improve, and we’re looking forward to it. The cyclists did very well, and I was impressed with the turnout; this should tell you that Ride Afrique is moving faster,” Richard Agu, CEO of Ride Afrique, stated.

The winners of the race took home cash prizes, medals, trophies and products from sponsors.
