They battled limited opportunities, scarce resources, and cultural expectations, often playing in silence while dreaming of stadiums filled with cheering fans.

Some had to leave home, travel across borders, or fight for every chance to prove themselves on the pitch.

In Morocco, Lamia Boumehdi broke barriers by leading TP Mazembe Women to their first-ever CAF Women’s Champions League title in 2024, making history as the first female coach to lift the trophy with a team outside her homeland.

Asisat Oshoala, one of Nigeria’s great players, turned her backyard dreams into a record six CAF Player of the Year awards.

Her exploits at Barcelona made her one of the most lethal finishers in football.

Desiree Ellis


In 2022, Ellis would lead South Africa to its first-ever WAFCON triumph. Before that, she earned 32 caps for her country, scoring goals and even captaining the team before retiring from international football in 2002.
