Exactly 21 years ago, Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe resigned from his role as President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) under controversial circumstances.

During his tenure, a misunderstanding between him and the 37-member Executive Council escalated into a major dispute.

Tamakloe, who assumed office in April 2004, attempted to settle the grievances amicably, but his efforts proved futile as tensions continued to rise.

The Executive Council threatened to initiate impeachment proceedings against the then GFA president. Disagreeing with the move, Tamakloe took the matter to the High Court in Accra.

However, his attempt to block the proceedings through legal action hit a snag when the court ruled that the Executive Council could proceed with the impeachment process.

He questioned why the GFA statutes granted more power to the Executive Council than to the elected president in decision-making.

This development infuriated Dr Tamakloe, who subsequently resigned in a letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, while also criticising the High Court’s ruling.

“The High Court ruling makes my position untenable, and I believe I must resign. The court ruled that for daring to make reforms in the football association, the Executive Council can go ahead with impeachment proceedings against me.

"It is absurd that the GFA statutes give control of football matters to the Executive Council while the management board is put in charge of administration,” he fumed.

Following his resignation in 2005, Kwesi Nyantakyi took over the mantle to steer the affairs of Ghana football.
