Tragedy struck at El Molinón on Sunday, March 1, 2026, when Constantino Rodríguez, affectionately known in Pola de Siero as “Tante,” collapsed just minutes into Sporting de Gijón’s match.

The 82-year-old had come to the stadium with his son and grandson, continuing a lifelong tradition of supporting his team.

According to reports from El Periódico Mediterráneo, Rodríguez, a Silver member and season-ticket holder for over four decades, had taken his usual seat at the corner between the south end and east stand.

Only four minutes into the game, he suffered a sudden heart attack. Medical staff attempted to resuscitate him, but tragically, he could not be saved. The stadium fell into a heavy silence as fans and fellow supporters came to terms with the loss.

Rodríguez, a retired bricklayer who had dedicated his life to construction, lived on San Antonio Street in Pola de Siero. He leaves behind his widow, Elisa, and a family already marked by the earlier loss of his son, Iván, at 39.

The club provided full support to his family throughout the harrowing day, with heartfelt gestures from Sporting de Gijón officials and players. Defender Brian Oliván even gave his shirt to Rodríguez’s 20-year-old grandson, Sergio.

When play resumed, the team and fans paid tribute to “Tante” with a minute of silence, flowers, chants, and applause.
