The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has provided clarity on the decision to include Black Queens head coach Kim Lars in the Black Stars’ technical team.
On Friday, February 6, the GFA announced the addition of five new members to the senior men’s team’s staff, including French coach Alain Ravera, Spanish analyst Jose Daniel MartÃnez Alfonso, Carlos Lozano Romero, Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi, and Björkegren.
Speaking to Akoma FM, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum emphasised that Björkegren’s appointment reflects his proven track record and the continued value he brings to Ghanaian football.
“With what Kim has achieved so far, he has justified his expertise, and we believe he has something extra to contribute to the team. For now, his full concentration is on the Black Queens, and after March, he will turn his attention to the Black Stars,” he said.
Björkegren is currently in Ghana overseeing preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), with the goal of guiding the Black Queens to World Cup qualification.
“Kim is in Ghana to continue with the Black Queens’ preparation for the Women’s AFCON. The mission is clear: to qualify for the World Cup. After the tournament in March, he will then join the Black Stars,” he added.
The Black Stars are scheduled to regroup in March ahead of international friendlies against Austria and Germany as part of their World Cup preparations.
Ghana, drawn in Group L, will open their 2026 World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and wrap up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
