Haringey Boxing Club organizes clinic for officials

Accra, Oct. 27, GNA - United Kingdom-based Haringey Boxing Club on Wednesday organized a coaching clinic for ring officials and coaches of the Africa Gloves Golden Warrior (AGGW) at the Prisons Canteen, Cantonments, Accra.

The one-day clinic is to update the officials of the AGGW on the modern trends of amateur boxing in line with the development of the sport in the country.

The Ghanaian officials were also taken through the rudiments of the computerized scoring system and also the distinction between a scoring point and a non-scoring point.

The referees were also taught some techniques with regards to officiating of bouts in the amateur ranks as against professional boxing.

Gerry Wilmott, Founder of the Haringey Boxing Club, Brian John, head coach and Terri Kelly, a Judge and also the London Chairwoman for female boxing, took the participants through the various sessions. The United Kingdom-based boxing club also donated boxing gloves and hand wrappers amongst others to the AGGW team.

Gideon Quartey, Chairman of Dade Boxing Promotions Syndicate, who are the local partners of AGGW, commended their British counterparts for updating and refreshing the minds of the coaches and ring officials on some of the latest trends in amateur boxing.

About 40 participants, made up of coaches and ring officials took part in the session.

Meanwhile, the AGGW team will host their British counterparts in an international championship on Wednesday night at the Salenko Beach Resort, near Osekan Beach Resort, Accra.

The Haringey team arrived in Accra last Tuesday night with an eight member team made up of Kingsley Okolie (76kg), Mark McKiernan (79Kg), Andre Whyte (60kg), Adrian Yeboah (57kg), Nick Parpa (86kg), Tope Omisore (93kg) and Davud Cinko (71kg).

The British will wrap up their tour of the country with the final bout on Saturday, October 30 at the Prisons Canteen, Cantonment.
