Ten-day Universities Games opens at Legon

Accra, June 7, GNA - The Minister for Youth and Sports, Madam Akua Sena Dansua has reiterated government's commitment to provide the necessary support to construct and complete facilities for sporting activities in the country.

Madam Dansua said government would also continue to ensure that teams representing the nation at international competitions are given the necessary assistance to enable them participate fully in the events.

The Minister said this in a speech read on behalf at the opening of the 21st edition of the Ghana

Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games at the University of Ghana, Legon in Accra. The six public Universities made up of the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science

and Technology, (KNUST) University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University for Development Studies,

University of Mines and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) are participating in the ten-day competition. It was under the theme "Discovering the talent within an era of Sport development". Events being competing for are basketball, volley ball, handball, lawn tennis, table tennis, football,

hockey and athletics. Madam Dansua said that the National Sport Council would also be reconstituted with a workable

constitution recognized by both local and international bodies. On the theme of the Games, Madam Dansua said government aims at providing the necessary platform

for an increased growth in sport and recreation yto unearth talents for the country. She added that government is determined to implement its sports policies by ensuring that the Sport

Bill becomes a law as soon as practicable hence the series of workshops being organised to fine-tune the

Bill. Madam Dansua said government last year sponsored GUSA to the World Universities Games in Serbia,

adding that "this shows the preparedness of government in helping to develop sports. The President of GUSA, Dr Ernest Awunta said sports play a vital and pivotal role in the total

development of the students and populace. In an opening football match, University of Ghana beat University of Mines 5-3.
