Hearts To Get $750,000 Compensation

The world soccer body said the 12 teams that were to play in Spain this year would receive $750,000 each in compensation. The governing body of Spanish soccer will receive $1 million.

Teams entered were: Boca Juniors (Argentina), Deportivo (Spain), Wollongong (Australia), Zamalek (Egypt), Palmeiras (Brazil), Olimpia (Honduras), Galatasaray (Turkey), Al-Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Real Madrid (Spain), Jubilo Iwata (Japan), Hearts of Oak (Ghana), Galaxy (United States).

World Club Championship Might Grow

The FIFA World Club Championship, canceled this year because of financial problems, could resurface in 2003 with four more teams.

FIFA, the governing body of world soccer, proposed a 16-team tournament in 2003, probably in Spain. This year's event was scheduled for Spain in late July and early August but abandoned because of a lack of sponsorship and TV contracts.

FIFA will decide on the format and host nation during a Dec. 1 meeting in South Korea.

FIFA said the tournament would be held between mid-January and mid-February, or mid-July and mid-August. In addition to Spain, other candidates include: Australia, Egypt, England, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Uruguay and the United States.
