Subayo Golden Eagles aims at National Women's Soccer League

Obuasi, Aug. 19, GNA - Subayo Women's Soccer Project which was last year inaugurated at Obuasi with the aim of encouraging young ladies to develop interest in football alongside their educational pursuit has celebrated its first anniversary.

The Project has within the period of its existence been able to mobilize about 30 young ladies mostly Senior High School (SHS) students from within and outside the Obuasi Municipality to form a formidable soccer team known as Subayo Golden Eagles.

The head coach of Golden Eagles, Yakubu Mambo Sharif told GNA Sports after an anniversary fund game at the Obuasi Secondary Technical School Park in which Subayo Engles beat All Stars 4-0 that "The team has talented young ladies and we are now aiming at playing in the national Women's Soccer League next year,".

Frank Boateng, the Project Programme Manager reiterated the project's determination to participate in the women's league but added "the major challenge is financing the team and the availability of other logistics including means of transport."

He said Subayo was committed to investing in the young ladies to help unearth their hidden talents to make them productive in the society.

At a dinner organized to honour the outstanding players of the Project, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), John Alexander Ackon noted that the project was a laudable noting that such initiatives need support to towards the moral development of young ladies who are in most cases vulnerable to social evils.

The MCE said the Office was committed to developing sports in the Municipality and that the Assembly would partner the project to deepen abd develop women's soccer in the area.

In a goodwill message sent to the team from Riverside, California, USA, Ms Mbumwae Suba-Smith, the founder of the Project reminded the players that "Subayo Golden Eagles stands for respect, dedication, unity, love, hope and sensitivity," adding that, "teamwork is hard but it is best if we all pull together at all times."

Robert Airhart, Chairman of Riverside-Obuasi Sister City Relations encouraged the players to take great interest in their training noting that "sports allows one to find tune and prepare towards the future. Enterprising Cynthia Ankobea, Josephine Serwaa Adams and Vida Opoku Agyeman were honoured for being the 'Best Player', 'Most Disciplined' and Future Prospect' players of the Club respectively. 19 Aug. 09
